South Dakota's Premier Women's Award

Statement of Purpose

The Spirit of Dakota Award is presented annually to an outstanding South Dakota woman who has demonstrated vision, courage and strength of character in the development of her family, community, and/or state.  The award is sponsored by the Spirit of Dakota Award Society headquartered in Huron, South Dakota the host city for the Spirit of Dakota sculpture located at the Crossroads Hotel and Huron Event Center. Since its beginning in 1987, eighteen South Dakota women have received this prestigious honor.

Qualifications

The Spirit of Dakota Award Honoree is a woman who has demonstrated:

  •     leadership qualities in her community and/or state;
  •     involvement in the social, cultural, and/or educational advancement for others;
  •     a willingness to serve others with vision and purpose without personal gain;
  •     a daring and bold attitude that emulates the true spirit of prairie women;
  •     active involvement in organizations within her community and has contributed beyond ordinary membership; and
  •     strength of character, courage, and serves as a role model for present and future generations in her community and beloved state of South Dakota.

The nominee does not need to be a native of South Dakota, but must be a living resident of the state.  The nominee's age is not a factor in the selection process.
